    Rafael Alegria (Via Campesina) and the continuity of the Peoples´ Conference held in Bolivia

    Honduran leader Rafael Alegria explained at the UN COP16 on Climate Change the meaning of the Peoples´ Agreement on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth created in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in April, 2010. The member of the Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations (CLOC- Via Campesina Central America) said that one of the main conclusions of the Peoples´ Conference is the fact that the future of humankind is threatened by an unfair economic system such as capitalism, that aims to profit without limits, and does not take into account the destruction of natural resources and of the climate it causes.     On Tuesday, December 7th, social movements present in Cancun for the UN Climate Conference organized a mass mobilization in the streets and also raised their demands inside the space of the official negotiations. Social organizations are already speaking of a “Cancun-hagen”, comparing the utter failure of the negotiations in Copenhagen, Denmark, last year to what is occurring in this Mexican city now, filled with secrecy and lack of transparency.     Organizations march to reject presence of the World Bank in climate finance

    On Friday, at the South-South Summit on Climate Justice and Climate Finance which is being carried out as part of the activities parallel to the COP16, there was a demonstration in Cancun called by international network Jubilee South. Several members of the environmentalist federation Friends of the Earth participated. Read more
