In this section Real World Radio aims to expose the murders of social activists and the cases of death threats against leaders. We will report on the wave of criminalization of the social protest. In 2009, Pacific Rim, a Canadian mining corporation, filed a lawsuit against El Salvador before the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), as a response to the Central American country suspending the corporation´s permit to exploit El Dorado mine, in San Isidro, Cabañas department. El Salvador had made this decision after years of opposition by the communities against the gold extraction project. Read more

Today on February 18th 2015, Friends of the Earth Russia calls for a day of solidarity on behalf of environmental activist Evgeny Vitishko, to mark his one-year imprisonment. Vitishko is serving a three-year sentence, allegedly accused of damaging an illegally installed fence belonging to the governor of Krasnodar province. Vitaly Servetnik from Friends of the Earth Russia comments on the unclear motifs behind the imprisonment of Evgeny Vitishko and emphasizes troublesome working conditions for environmental activists in Russia. “At this time (7:20 a.m.), November 20th, 2014, the ESMAD appears at (the municipality of) La Jagua, Garzón, (department of) Huila to disarticulate the pacific protest of 20 days as of today, demanding the strict enforcement of the decision of the Constitutional Court T-135.
