Peasant organizations of El Salvador call for passing of food sovereignty bill

Facilitating people’s access to a balanced diet, promoting state policies to regulate prices, favoring national production and increasing the food production capacity with a sustainable view of renewable natural resources are some of the general goals pursued by the food sovereignty bill drafted by peasant organizations of El Salvador, such as the National Council of Rural Workers, a member of La Via Campesina.
The Salvadorean organizations claim that 20 years of right-wing governments destroyed the country’s production so they call Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front’s (FMLN) administration to send the bill to be discussed in Parliament.
In a report for radio show La Voz de los Movimientos, peasant leaders of El Salvador said that the problem lies in the bad policies implemented on the sector that led an agricultural country to become a food importing country.
After this, the dismantling of the productive apparatus caused a massive wave of informal unemployment, to the point that nowadays only one in four Salvadoreans has a formal job.
They claim it would be important for the FMLN to move forward in considering some of the sensible issues, such as the approval of the food sovereignty law.
