Thousands of people mobilized last Tuesday in Honduras in the framework of the national strike called by the National Front of Popular Resistance. According to the Front, there were activities to support the measure in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Choluteca, Copan, El Progreso, La Ceiba, Colon Comayagua, Catacamas, Tela and Danlí.

The demands that motivated this measure included an increase of the minimum wage and the salaries of state officers, a rejection to the labour flexibilization proposed by Porfirio Lobo´s administration –considered by the resistance a continuation of the dictatorship that took place in the country last year-, the support to university workers that are in conflict and the defense of regulations to protect farmers. The front also expressed its rejection to the privatization of natural resources.

In a press release, the National Front of Popular Resistance said that the actions promoted by Lobo´s administration are “illegitimate and illegal”, because “they are imposed by sectors kidnapped by a privileged class against the will of the people”.

Also, the Front stated that there will be a mobilization each time the government attacks the demands of the people, and said that in order to find a permanent solution, Honduras must be reorganized.

“We have to reorganize the country, its economic system, its laws and values imposed to continue exploiting”, said the Front, demanding a National Constituent Assembly.

In addition, the Front announced new massive mobilizations this month: next week there will be one to celebrate Honduras Independence Day.
