At times when the Argentinean judiciary is being questioned for several conservative decisions, an appeals court in Santiago del Estero province dismissed an appeal to release the responsible for the murder of peasant activist Cristian Ferreyra.

The murderers: Jorge Ciccioli and Javier Juárez, leaders of armed gangs in association with soy businessmen, have issued threats and assaulted people in their communities.
The member of the Peasant Movement of Santiago del Estero (MOCASE) Ricardo Cuéllar spoke with Real World Radio about the case.

Cristian was 25 years old. On November 16 of 2011 we was home in San Antonio community preparing an assembly where other MOCASE activists would participate. At a certain point Javier and Arturo Juarez went to his house. They are both assassins hired by soy producer Jose Ciccioli from Santa Fe province. Without saying a word they shot him in cold blood. Hours later Cristian was dead.

The other two peasant leaders who were with Cristian were injured and were witnesses to
the crime. The peasants of San Antonio are besieged by the growing advance of bulldozers, soy producers, politicians and private police. There are 25 families living in 2,000 hectares of land who have suffered several assaults.

Cuellar said that the demand of social organizations is that the case should go to a public hearing to set a precedent to avoid the constant threats and aggressions against the peasants and indigenous living in Argentina.

He also recalled that the National Indigenous and Peasant Movement (MNIC) is promoting and demanding the passing of a law, known as “Cristian Ferreyra” to stop peasant evictions.
