In Panama, in the past few months, indigenous people from the Ngabe Bugle community and peasant organizations of Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí and Veraguas province have been protesting against the neoliberal policies of President Ricardo Martinelli.
For this reason, the Independent Ngabe Bugle and Peasant Movement was created a few weeks ago. Organizations such as the Panamanian Peasant Union (member of CLOC/Via Campesina) and the National Front in Defense of Economic and Social Rights (Frenadeso) are part of the movement.
Leader Erick Fernandez, from the Panamanian Peasant Union, explained that the main goal of this space is to improve coordination among organizations that share different struggles, such as the rejection to the Mining Code reform.
In an interview with Frenadeso News, Fernandez warned that the increase of militarism and governmental repression is seen in the “death projects” related to mining, hydroelectric dams and tourism projects that displace native peoples.
His past as businessman can explain some of the positions of President Martinelli. He consolidated his economic position as owner of one of the largest supermarket chains of the country, Super 99, and shareholder of sugar company La Victoria, plastic factory Plastigol and several Panamanian communication media.
In a resolution issued by the first meeting of the Independent Movement, they make reference to other issues about the socio-economic reality of Panama, such as the increase of the cost of living, the increase of public transportation fares, an inexistent health system, absence of schools, malnutrition, lack of job sources and support to production projects.
“This has been happening with other Panamanian administrations, and Ricardo Martinelli’s administration is not the exception, which raises the urgent need to raise awareness within the popular movement”, stated the movement, according to Frenadeso’s website.
