Resistance of communities to the Mphanda Nkuwa dam in Mozambique

Mozambican social organizations are warning that the plans of the government to install the huge Mphanda Nkuwa dam on the Zambezi River will cause serious environmental impacts, affecting communities that depend on the river for their lives and displacing thousands of people to generate power to be exported to South Africa.

Activist Anabela Lemos, of Justiça Ambiental (JA!) – Friends of the Earth Mozambique warns in the following interview conducted by Dominic Brown of Amandla! that the development promoted when arguing in favor of large companies does not answer the needs of the people.

Anabela was interviewed, together with representatives of communities affected by the installation of the Mphanda Nkuwa dam, in the framework of the Permanent Peoples Tribunal of Southern Africa, held in South Africa, on August 17-18. The PPT was organized by the Southern Africa Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power and allowed eight countries of the region to shed light on the impacts generated by the pressure of transnational corporations.

The member of JA! also spoke in broader terms about the architecture of impunity and how this logic is reproduced in many countries, and she also called on the resistance and solidarity of the people in order to confront corporate impunity.
