Returning

Zelaya announced his return to Honduras and denounces the dictatorship is trying to murder him

Honduran President, Manuel Zelaya, -ousted by a coup d´etat on June 28th- has said on Tuesday that he will return to his country soon. Zelaya also accused the Head of the Armed Forces, Romeo Vázquez Velasquez, of planning his murder.

“I believe they are trying to murder me, they are hiring armed groups. [Vázquez] has clearly stated that he will send people to murder me before I arrive to Honduras”, said the constitutional president to Radio Globo.

“If Romeo doesn´t kill me, I will go to my people to meet with my family. I hold General Romeo fully responsible for any direct harm I suffer”, he added.

Zelaya said he will return to his country, after the failure of the second round of negotiations between the constitutional and the de facto governments, which took place during the weekend and was mediated by Costa Rican President, Oscar Arias.

This mediation was supported by the international community, but was not accepted by Honduran social movements, since they consider this only gives more time to the perpetrators of the coup to settle.

Something similar stated on Wednesday the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, by saying to official newspaper Granma that Arias had “assisted” the coup perpetrators.

“The real Oscar Arias story indicates that the man we are dealing with is a neo-liberal politician, talented and with a gift for words, extremely calculating and a faithful ally of the United States”, said Castro, and he added that “even Arias himself has fallen into the great trap set up by the Department of State.”

“Nevertheless, the people of Honduras are the ones who will have the last word”, the former Cuban president concluded.
