Health Tribunal to Expose Goldcorp’s Abuses in Latin America

Members of communities affected by mining from Latin America, scientists, academics, spiritual leaders, journalists and human rights defenders will participate in the International People’s Health Tribunal held in the Guatemalan town San Miguel Ixtahuacán, in San Marcos department.

The tribunal, to be covered by Real World Radio, aims to expose the health and social impacts of Canadian mining corporation Goldcorp in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, and more specifically the impacts of Marlin mine’s operations in San Miguel Ixtahuacán, of “San Martín” mine, which is about to close down un Valle de Siria, Honduras and of
“Los Filos” mine in Guerrero, Mexico.

The tribunal is not legally binding, but an ethical, moral and political one. It was called by the Network of Solidairty with the Communities Affected by Mining Injustice (MISN), the Mesoamerican Movement against the Mining Extractive Model (M4), Frente de Defensa Miguelense (FREDEMI), the Kolol Qnan Tx’otx’ Commission of San Miguel Ixtahuacán and the International Coalition against Unjust Mining in Guatemala (CAMIGUA),

“How has Goldcorp affected the health and well-being of the affected communities? Does Goldcorp own a social license to operate in these communities?” are some of the questions that the Health Tribunal will try to answer over the weekend.

The jury will be made up by international renowned people in different areas, including activists, academics, religious leaders, journalists and experts in medicine from the US, El Salvador, Chile, Guatemala and Mexico.
