Strong Resistance at Bajo Lempa

Affected communities are preparing for the 2nd International Meeting of the MOVIAC

The area of Bajo Lempa, located in the southern coast of El Salvador, is one of the examples of how climate change is impacting the poorest communities. Every year, thousands of families of the region suffer from floods, which are caused by climate factors and also by the mismanagement of hydroelectric dams, according to the local population.

But this area is an example of resistance and a model of social organization as well, recognized by the elected president himself, Mauricio Funes, from the left wing party Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberación Nacional, who will take office on June 1st.

This is a strong feeling among the local people. Gilberto Berrios, from the Association of United Communities for the Economic and Social Development of Bajo Lempa stated to Real World Radio that their lands were acquired by “blood, sweat and tears”.

Berrios is also one of the organizers of the second Meeting of the Movement of Victims and People Affected by Climate Change.
