From October 24-29, tens of social movements and organizations that are part of the Global Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power and Stop Impunity will hold a “Week of Mobilization” in Geneva, Switzerland, to push for a UN binding treaty on transnational corporations and human rights violations. That same week, the Intergovernmental Working Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council, in charge of discussing and developing this binding instrument, will hold its second session at the Palais des Nations. Real World Radio will cover the official talks and will join social movements inside the Palais des Nations and will participate in the parallel activities and mobilizations in the streets of Geneva.

“It is unfortunate hearing some countries, including the European Union, saying “we have the Principles” (with reference to the “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights”, a set of voluntary guidelines issued by the UN). The president of CESTA – Friends of the Earth El Salvador, Ricardo Navarro, said he was “relieved” with the favorable ruling granted to his country by the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID, a World Bank body), in the claim filed by mining transnational corporation Pacific Rim. “I´m relieved because Pacific Rim, now Oceana Gold, wanted to steal 300 million dollars from the Salvadoran State”, said the environmental activist. The Treaty Alliance is calling the international community to participate in the second session of the Intergovernmental Working Group (IGWG) to take place in Geneva, from October 24-28.
