The delegation part of the "Justice for Berta Cáceres" International Mission continues with its plans outside the Honduran capital city. Today, the mission travelled to La Esperanza, Intibucá department, where Berta Cáceres was murdered. In tune with the refusals to meet that the international delegation has been receiving from the Honduran State, the meeting with the judge in charge of the investigation about Berta´s case was cancelled without prior notice. On the contrary, the meetings in solidarity and support with the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) and members of the community of the region have been taking place today. The situation in Honduras is of complete alert. The outrageous and still unpunished murder of Berta Cáceres seems to have intensified the violence and persecution against social activists, indigenous people and peasants in a country whose people continues to be under attack since the Coup d´Etat of 2009. Yesterday, after a violent eviction in Rio Chiquito municipality, Cortés department, the member of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) Nelson García was shot and murdered when returning to the place where he was staying. The International Mission “Justice for Berta Caceres” started on March 16 in Honduras and it is made up of European MPs and members of Latin American movements and organizations. The mission aims to meet with different sectors of the Honduran State to demand justice for Berta Cáceres, security for social defenders of the country and for Mexican activist Gustavo Castro who is still blocked from leaving the Mexican Embassy in Honduras. March 17, 2016 Representatives of social networks from different regions of the world will travel to Honduras today as part of the International Mission “Justice for Berta Cáceres”. The mission is organised by the Honduran organisation Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH) - from the National Network of Human Rights defenders in Honduras - and individuals, collectives and organisations making up an international network of solidarity with the people of Honduras. The mission demands an impartial investigation of the brutal assassination of the indigenous Lenca leader Berta Cáceres, on the 3rd of March. Read more

The organization Otros Mundos Chiapas – Friends of the Earth Mexico is demanding that its coordinator, activist Gustavo Castro, witness of the murder of Lenca leader Berta Caceres in Honduras, is allowed to return to Mexico and continue with the necessary legal proceedings from his country. They are also warning that the Honduran judicial authorities continue without revealing information about why exactly he is legally required. Read more
