The social movements and organizations that participated in the National Congress on Land, Territories and Sovereignty in Colombia, recognized water as a “living being” and proclaimed themselves as its “defenders”.

In this Congress “we proclaim ourselves defenders of water in all its forms: lagoons, rivers, creeks, rain and underground water”, Sara Cuellar from the Association of Indigenous Cabildos (ACIN) of the North of Cauca told Real World Radio. She was the coordinator of the thematic area on Water at the Congress.

Real World Radio’s correspondent and member of CENSAT-Friends of the Earth Colombia, Danilo Urrea, interviewed Sara during the event. She added “We hereby declare water as a public, common, social and community good” and she emphasized that access to water should be secured for use and consumption of small rural farmers and social organizations”.

ACIN leader said that as a result of the issues discussed in her working group on Water, the social organizations concluded that they should fight so that states secure free access to water. “We need to fight to manage our own community water systems in order to build a national community water network” that will ensure access to water to produce food.
