The Social Movements’ Assembly met in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in parallel to the Thematic Social Forum to agree on the steps forward to face the challenges ahead of the conference Rio+20 to be held this year.

The meeting’s final declaration clearly states that in order to overcome the current economic, environmental and climate crises, which are closely linked, “the solution is not to be found within the capitalist system”.

“The peoples of the world are suffering the effects of the deepening crisis of capitalism, where its main agents (banks, transnational corporations, media conglomerates, international institutions and governments) seek to increase their benefits at the expense of an interventionist and neocolonialist policy”, says the Declaration issued on January 28 in Porto Alegre.

“Rio+20, to be held in June in Rio de Janeiro, 20 years after Eco ’92 strengthens the importance of the struggle for environmental justice in opposition to the capitalist development model. The attempt of “greening” capitalism, together with the imposition of new instruments of “green economy” is a warning for the social movements to keep up our resistance and to take the leading role in building real alternatives to the crisis”.
