European journalists threatened in Honduras

Download: MP3 (1.2 Mb)

In Honduras, a delegation of eight Austrian and German journalists of the Ecumenical Peace and Justice Office, who arrived to the country aiming to work in defense of freedom of speech and to denounce human rights violations against indigenous communities, denounced they are receiving death threats.

This is what Berta Oliva, of Colombia, said in an interview with Contagio Radio. She is the Coordinator of the Committee of the Detained-Disappeared in Honduras. This situation is a consequence of the atmosphere of human rights violations suffered in the Central American country, especially in terms of freedom of speech and association, after the coup d’etat against Jose Manuel Zelaya.

“In terms of human rights, Honduras is living in a state of emergency”, said Oliva, who added that the threats aim to reduce visibility around the situation and avoid the access of activists and communicators to the country.

The situation is even more serious since Honduras is going through a pre-electoral period. While the elections will take place on the last Sunday of November, 2013, the candidates will be elected on November 18th, in primary elections.

They are tapping cellphones to locate the communities to be visited and interviewed by the journalists, said the Honduras activist, who expressed that this information would be used by the "different death squads operating in the country".

Despite the threats and attacks, she added that the European journalists continued travelling the country as planned.
