The Regional Forum against Agribusiness which will start on Friday in Asunción, Paraguay, will result in the consolidation of a strategic alliance between La Vía Campesina, The World March of Women and environmentalist federation Friends of the Earth International, around common actions in defense of food sovereignty, in addition to an agenda of specific actions to organize the resistance of peasant, indigenous, gender and popular movements against the agribusiness model.

This is what Pablo Valenzuela, in charge of the coordination of the event, told Real World Radio on behalf of Paraguayan organization Sobrevivencia.

Sobrevivencia and CONAMURI are the organizations behind this forum which will begin on Friday and will come to an end on Sunday 23rd.

According to Valenzuela, the crops which will feed the agrofuels industry –one of the false solutions to climate change- are causing impacts which are extremely detrimental to communities and the people.

Valenzuela also pointed out that GM soy was introduced in Paraguay in an irregular way, without authorization. Currently, soy takes up almost four million hectares, displacing the communities which used to live in those lands.
The imposition of soy monocultures is placing the goal of an integral agrarian reform even further.

In addition, Valenzuela analyzed the position of Fernando Lugo´s administration with reference to the Agro-toxics Law which was recently repealed by the Executive Branch due to the pressure exerted by big corporations of the sector.

The Regional Forum against Agribusiness and for Food Sovereignty is a continuation of the agreements achieved in February, 2007, in Mali, in the Food Sovereignty Forum which gathered several organizations from every corner of the world.

The Forum is also supported by organizations such as Conosur Sustentable, Food and Water Watch and the IPC (International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty).

Real World Radio will cover the entire event.
