This new section of Real World Radio is also a memorial page for all those who were murdered in their struggle for a socially just world.

    Tucson, Juarez and an Assault Weapons Ban

    The Glock 19 semiautomatic pistol that Jared Loughner is accused of using in his rampage in Tucson, Ariz., is, according to Glock’s website, “ideal for versatile use through reduced dimensions” and is “suitable for concealed carry.” The site continues, “Compact and subcompact Glock pistol model magazines can be loaded with a convincing number of rounds,” from the standard 15 up to 33. The shooter was able to kill and wound to the extent that he did, with six dead and 13 injured, because he had a semiautomatic, concealed weapon, along with the “extended magazine.” He was attempting to reload the weapon with another extended magazine when a brave, unarmed woman knocked his next clip from his hand.     Under threat

    Indigenous radio station closes down after fire threat

    On Friday, and after the constant threat suffered, the members of the garifuna community radio station Faluma Bimetu (Coco Dulce) from the Honduran city Triunfo de la Cruz, were forced to temporarily shut down the radio because they were running the risk of it to be set on fire. Read more

    No more deaths

    Mexican activist killed in Ciudad Juarez

    Last Sunday, tens of people gathered in Ciudad Juarez to hold a memorial for Susana Chavez, who was murdered on January 5th. The 36 year-old poet was a women's rights activist who had coined the term “Ni una más” (“Not one more”), used by the women and human rights groups to reject the feminicides in that city of the north of Mexico.     Constant Harassment

    Honduras: Threats and Kidnappings Continue in Bajo Aguan

    Juan Ramón Chinchilla is an activist of the Unified Peasant Movement of Aguan (MUCA) and the National Front of National Resistance (FNRP) in Honduras. He was kidnapped on January 8th, when he was getting out of a shopping mall in the community of La Concepcion and he was held in captivity for the following 48 hours. Read more

    A Bad Beginning Makes a Bad Ending

    2010 ends with harassment against grassroots organizations in Honduras

    The closing of 2010 in Honduras was not a reason for celebration for many organizations that oppose Porfirio Lobo's regime. There were reports of harassment and persecution against social leaders every day, according to the National Front of Popular Resistance (FNRP). Read more
