In this section Real World Radio aims to expose the murders of social activists and the cases of death threats against leaders. We will report on the wave of criminalization of the social protest. The Bribri indigenous people of Salitre, South of Costa Rica is suffering new episodes of harassment and their legitimate rights to this territory are being questioned again. With the new escalation of attacks, Bribri families have had their houses burnt down, in addition to being threatened and even physically assaulted in the past weeks. These events take place with police presence in the area, and under a valid precautionary measure issued by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the protection of the Bribri people. Read more

Yesterday, and after almost six months camping outside Santander´s government building, in Bucaramanga, 73 families affected by the Hidrosogamoso dam returned to their homes after reaching an agreement with the government and the company in charge of the hydroelectric project, Isagen. The main social and political groups gathered around the Agrarian, Peasant, Ethnic and Popular Summit of Colombia are expressing their concerns over the latest attacks against their organizations. The most recent attack took place on July 8, when 13 social activists were arrested and then sent to prison on July 28. Read more

While the demand for justice and the end of repression expanded through Mexico and the world for the disappearance of 43 students of the Rural Teacher Training School of Ayotzinapa in the municipality of Iguala, Guerrero state, the country was hit again with a new event that further demonstrates the fragile situation for social activists in that territory. On July 31st, Nadia Vera, Yesenia Quiroz, Rubén Espinosa, Alejandra Negrete and Mile Virginia Martin were killed in the Mexican capital, a fact that brings even closer the words 'terrorism' and 'State' in the Mesoamerican country. The Colombian social movement Peoples´ Congress warns that the trial against 13 social activists is “political, not judicial”. The goal is to continue “persecuting and criminalizing social movement organizations”, said Alexandra Bermudez, national spokesperson of the Peoples´ Congress. Read more

A complaint will be filed against the Judge that sent 13 social activists to prison in Bogota, Colombia, after they were arrested on July 8. This will be done by the lawyer of one of the activists after finding out that the judge met with a high rank of the Police in her office, a few minutes before yesterday´s hearing. Read more

“We don´t want elections under these conditions”, stated the participant of a Citizen Sit-In that was held for five days outside the Guatemalan Congress in the capital city, demanding the suspension of the elections scheduled for October.
