On Wednesday morning, three hooded and armed people shot and killed Honduran peasant leader Margarita Murillo in Villanueva, a rural area in Cortes department. Murillo died as she lived: with a hoe in her hands, ready to produce and give life in the lands for which she always fought. Read more

The leader of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH), Miriam Miranda, and another twenty members of the community were kidnapped by paramilitary forces in Vallecito, in Colon department. Community members managed to rescue them. Read more

This is what leader Santos Rosado said about the violent eviction he and 700 families of the Panama community recently suffered. On May 20, leaders of the Garifuna community of Triunfo de la Cruz, department of Atlanta, Honduras, together with members of the Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH) attended a hearing at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) where they denounced violations of their human and territorial rights. It was supposed to be a regular day of work for the Honduran peasant communities of San Isidro, El Despertar and La Trinidad farms, located by the Aguan River, in Trujillo municipality, Colon. After recovering their lands two years ago, the peasants produce several crops, such as maize and bananas, in addition to developing a livestock project. In the morning of May 21, the peasant families were surprised with a violent eviction by 300 members of the Xatruch III Operative and the Honduran National Police. Read more

Last Tuesday, May 13, Honduran MPs from the Libertad and Refundación (LIBRE) Party decided to carry out a peaceful sit-in aiming to denounce violence and the state's harsh suppression of peoples´ movements, demanding that their party be involved in the Electoral Supreme Court and that the National Congress Directive Board considers the bills submitted by LIBRE. The response by the government was to repress the measure inside the Congress. Read more
