Since Friday, Honduras Constitutional President, Manuel Zelaya, -ousted by a coup d´etat on June 28th- stays at the border between his country and Nicaragua, preparing his return to Honduran soil.

Hundreds of Honduran people managed to cross the border and enter Nicaraguan soil through blind spots, challenging the strong militarization present in the area. Zelaya is demanding that these Honduran people be considered refugees. Also, Nicaraguan Human Rights Prosecutor, Omar Cabezas, opened an office this week to receive denounces of human rights violations which took place in Honduras.

Cabezas pointed out that the Honduran people “are orphans” in terms of human rights, because Honduran Human Rights Prosecutor, Ramon Custodio, “has joined the perpetrators of the coup”.

In an interview with Telesur network, Zelaya said that the coup regime is responsible for over “1500 violations to human rights” against the population. Zelaya also complimented the decision made by US government on Tuesday, to suspend the diplomatic visas to four authorities of the de facto government, led by Roberto Micheletti.

The US State Department pointed out that the reason behind this decision was that the Executive Branch, presided by Barack Obama, does not recognise Micheletti´s government, and added that these measures are likely to continue if the crisis in Honduras does not come to an end.

The Organization of American States will meet on Friday to analyse the situation in Honduras again. According to OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, the organization might take new measures against the dictatorial government.
