The Municipal Service Project is a research project that has been exploring alternatives to the privatization and commercialization of electricity, health, water and sanitation services in Africa, Asia and Latin America for years.

It is made up by academics, trade unions, non-governmental organizations, social movements and activists from different parts of the world. The first two stages of the project (2000-2007) were focused on challenging privatization and it now analyzes successful alternative models. According to the project’s website, its aim is to understand the necessary conditions for the sustainability and reproduction of these models.

Some organizations, movements and social networks defending the human right to water are part of the Municipal Service Project: la Red Vida, Transnational Institute, Focus on the Global South and other organizations from different countries.

It is a mainly academic project focused on action with the goal of bringing real change to the supply of services. According to Real World Radio’s correspondent at the Alternative World Water Forum in Marseille (France), Danilo Urrea, the Municipal Service Project focused on the “building of alternatives” and it developed a first mapping which resulted in a book titled "Alternatives to Privatization".

The project is now advancing with case studies to research on the concept of “corporatization”, analyzing public companies that start acting as private corporations, even though they haven’t been privatized.
