#COP13 – We need a complete system change to protect biodiversity

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is already 24 years old but it hasn’t been able to meet its main goal: the conservation of biodiversity. Pollution, deforestation, destruction of habitats, extinction of species: the ecosystems are suffering daily from human activities developed under the laws of perpetual economic growth, productivity and consumerism.

The 20 targets of the CBD to protect biodiversity, known as the Aichi Targets, have not been met because the Convention only proposes moderate changes but it never questions the basis of the global destructive economic system. "We need a complete system change", said Nele Marien, co-coordinator of the Forests and Biodiversity Program at Friends of the Earth International. There is no better way to reduce the pollution by nutrients caused by the industrial agriculture than by promoting and practicing agroecology, says Friends of the Earth.

This interview with Marien is the first of a series of three-minute interviews to members of the Friends of the Earth’s delegation at the 13th Conference of the Parties (COP 13) of the UN CBD, in Cancun (Mexico), on current issues regarding biodiversity.
