“Defend environmental defenders. Stop Agua Zarca”

This is the beginning of a short animation recently launched by environmental federation Friends of the Earth International and the movement of consumers and workers Some of Us. Through it, they are pressuring financial institutions that are supporting the hydroelectric project Agua Zarca in Honduras to withdraw their funds from the venture.

This dam is planned to be built on the Gualcarque River, Intibucá department, considered a sacred place for the Lenca people. The project has had the opposition of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations (COPINH) for years, led by leader Berta Cáceres, until the day she was murdered on March 2nd.

“Honduras is the most dangerous country in the world to be an environmental defender, with 101 deaths between 2010 and 2014”, warns the two-minute short film. It also adds that Agua Zarca´s investors have suspended their funding after the murder of Berta, and the murder of another COPINH member, Nelson García, on March 15.

“Suspension is not enough. We need to stop the Agua Zarca project before more lives are lost. Demand investors withdraw their money from Agua Zarca”, says the video over the end. Among these investors we can highlight the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation (Finnfund) and the Dutch Development Bank (FMO).
