The federation Friends of the Earth International sent a small delegation to Tegucigalpa, capital of Honduras, to participate in the “International Peoples´ Meeting – Berta Cáceres Lives On” demanding justice over the murder of this Lenca indigenous leader and in solidarity with the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH).

The attack that resulted in the death of Berta on March 3rd also involved a member of the Friends of the Earth´s family. Activist Gustavo Castro, coordinator of Otros Mundos Chiapas – Friends of the Earth Mexico, was with Berta at that time and was wounded and left for dead. But he managed to save his life and then had to experience difficult times in Honduras, where judicial authorities made him stay for about a month, something that was illegal, according to his lawyers.

On Friday, the members of Friends of the Earth will visit La Esperanza, in Intibucá department. They will travel to the Gualcarque River, a sacred place for the Lenca people, that Berta defended so much, and will continue expressing solidarity with the Lenca people who live in the area. Friends of the Earth´s delegation is led by the organization´s Chair, Jagoda Munic of Croatia, who in this short video tells us about the presence of this delegation in Honduras.
