The 6th Congress of the Latin American Coordination of Countryside Organizations (CLOC-Via Campesina) strengthened the concept of socialism as an inspiration and an alternative model to that “imposed by capital”.

This is what the leader of the Landless Rural Workers Movement of Brazil, Marina Dos Santos, said during the march that took place on April 17, on the International Day of Peasant Struggle.

The leader highlighted the advances of the peasant movement “in practice” with reference to the building of food sovereignty in the territories and she also made reference to the need to study, discuss and deepen on a change of the production model, such as socialism.

“We will continue resisting, strengthening the struggles and facing this model imposed on us”, said Marina to summarize the continental meeting which was attended by over a thousand delegates in Buenos Aires.

“People say socialism is dead… but we don´t think so”. This can be seen “in our practice, in our victories over the land, in our collective systems, the cooperatives, and the development of agroecology”. Based on these elements of the peasant movement, “we need to resume the discussions about socialism”.
