Interview with Lucia Ortiz (Friends of the Earth International) in the path towards the week of mobilizations to be held in Geneva, Switzerland

Download: MP3 (1.2 Mb)

From June 23-27, 2014, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will analyze the adoption of a resolution to establish a mandatory legal instrument to enforce regulations around human rights and transnational corporations (TNCs).

A wide variety of international and national grassroots organizations are organizing a week of mobilizations in Geneva and around the world to denounce transnational companies and their "architecture" of impunity against human rights violations, protected by global financial institutions (such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund) and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) or Association and Investment Protection Agreements that subject the sovereignty of States to business profits.

The environmental federation Friends of the Earth International, through its work in defense of the human rights of nature defenders and in the framework of the Economic Justice Resisting Neoliberalism Program (EJRN) will participate in this week, both at the UNHRC´s headquarters and all over the world.

Real World Radio interviewed Lucia Ortiz, EJRN coordinator, to know more about the goals for this week. She said that there is a growing need to make transnational corporations comply with human rights regulations, which is supported by a group of countries members of the UN, especially the Global South.

The activist talked about the South African push in favor of the initiative by the Ecuadorian government to make transnational corporations comply with human rights legislation.

Real World Radio will cover this week of actions as part of the social communication work of Friends of the Earth International. We invite you to promote this coverage with the hashtag #StopCorporateImpunity.
