Good press coverage at farmers meeting in Jakarta

On Saturday, La Via Campesina held the first press conference for its 6th International Conference in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Several journalists were present at the press room that was especially set up at the Padepokan Pencak Silat Taman Mini, the location of the global peasants’ meeting.
The speakers at the press conference were - Henry Saragih, the general coordinator of La Via Campesina, José Mateus, a leader of the National Farmers Union of Mozambique (UNAC), and Dena Hoff of the National Family Farm Coalition of Canada. These last two organizations are also part of La Via Campesina.
In her presentation, Hoff spoke about Via Campesina’s 4th Women’s Assembly that was held on June 5th and 6th. She highlighted the gains that the women of Via Campesina have obtained in defense of their rights, of the society in general and of Mother Earth as well. They have done so through their struggles for food sovereignty, biodiversity, peace and climate justice, among many others.
