#COP13 – The only way to protect biodiversity in agriculture is agroecology

Nele Marien, co-coordinator of Friends of the Earth International´s Forest and Biodiversity Program, analyzes the consequences of “mainstreaming biodiversity”

“Mainstreaming” biodiversity in four economic sectors (agriculture, tourism, fisheries, forestry) is the main agreement of the 196 countries that participated in the 13th Conference of the Parties (COP 13) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

This is supposed to encourage said sectors to take into account biodiversity in their development strategies. But it seems more likely that they are including it in their plans aiming to profit from it, instead of protecting it. A clear example of this trend is that the countries agreed to promote intensive agriculture, instead of agroecology.

The interview with Nele Marien is part of a series of interviews to members of the Friends of the Earth International delegation participating in the COP13, in Cancun (Mexico) about the current issues related to biodiversity.
