Activist Anne van Schaik, member of Friends of the Earth Europe, warned this Thursday about the double speech of the European Union (EU) with respect to human rights and called the bloc to actively participate in the negotiations starting this Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, towards a binding treaty on transnational corporations and human rights violations.
The negotiations will be held by the Intergovernmental Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council, mandated since 2014 to set the bases for this binding treaty, which will hold its second session next week. The first session was held in 2015.
On October 13, Friends of the Earth Europe, together with several other organizations, delivered to the EU 90,000 signatures of European citizens calling on the bloc to support the binding treaty on transnational corporations and human rights. They also demanded the bloc to participate in the negotiations starting on Monday in Geneva. Anne van Schaik welcomed the fact that the EU will finally participate in the UN negotiations, where so far it has played an extremely negative role, according to the activist, but demanded that this participation is active in support to the treaty.
In the interview with Real World Radio, the activist explained, among other things, why she thinks that the EU has blocked the process so far towards the binding treaty on transnational corporations and human rights violations.
