Why the Paris COP on Climate Change is important

With less than three days of negotiations on climate change to go in the framework of the United Nations (UN) in Bonn, Germany, before the COP21that will begin on November 30, in Paris, France, Filipino activist Lidy Nacpil, coordinator of the Asian Peoples Movement on Debt and Development, said: “to save our people, our planet, our communities, we have to act globally”.

“So one important component of that is an agreement among governments to act now, act urgently, and to address the massive emissions’ reductions that have to be done immediately and to address it in a way that is fair, in a way that is equitably shared. That’s why Paris is important for us”, she added in an audiovisual interview with Rachel Kennerley from FoE England, Wales and Norhern Ireland (FOE EWNI).

The UN negotiations in Bonn started on Monday and will come to an end on Friday. The next round of negotiations will be the COP 21 itself in Paris, where a new deal to face climate change could be reached.

“If they (the governments) continue to be obstacles to solving climate change, we will continue with this fight (to address this crisis)”, said Nacpil at the end of the interview.
