Why is a binding treaty on human rights and transnational corporations so important?

Representatives of Friends of the Earth from five countries and two guests from social movements denounced on Wednesday, in Geneva, Switzerland, several cases of environmental crimes and systematic human rights violations by transnational corporations.

This was during a side event in the framework of the week of negotiations of the United Nations Intergovernmental Working Group on transnational corporations and human rights.

The activity, attended by approximately 50 people, was organized by Friends of the Earth International, the Movement of Dam-Affected People of Brazil (MAB) the Grassroots Palestinian Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign and the Global Campaign to dismantle corporate power and end impunity.

Cases about the actions of Total in Nigeria, Pacific Rim in El Salvador, Wilmar in Nigeria and Indonesia, among others, were exposed with solid arguments by the speakers.

Friends of the Earth US and Environmental Rights Action – Friends of the Earth Nigeria took the opportunity to launch their publication “"Exploitation and Empty Promises. Wilmar’s Nigerian land grab".

Below you´ll find a short video of the activity produced by Victor Barro of Friends of the Earth Spain – Friends of the Earth International. Audio in Spanish, English and French.
