Lack of compliance may lead to new agrarian strike in Colombia

If the commitments made by the Colombian government and the AgrarianSummit (made up by the main peasant organizations of the country) are not met by August, the agrarian strike that paralyzed the country two years ago in this South American country will be resumed, announced the organization PCN-Cloc- Via Campesina.

According to Jose Santo Caicedo, spokesperson of PCN, it is necessary to establish effective mechanisms in order to advance and avoid a new wave of mobilizations. The statements by the Afro Colombian leader were shared by the show Otra Mirada broadcasted by Contagio Radio.

The Agrarian Strike took place in August 2013, the dialogue table between the Agrarian Summit and Juan Manuel Santos administration was officially established in May 2014, almost a year later, and so far none of the eight issues agreed to be discussed were addressed. The parties haven´t been able either to advance on the initial trust agreements, such as on human rights.

The communities stated that the National Development Plan approved by the government was a slap in the face for them, because the demands of peasants, black and indigenous communities were not included. The PCN also stated that the budgetary issues have not been complied with and the mining-energy issue has not been addressed yet.

The PCN spokesperson believes it is necessary to establish mechanisms such as the appointment of a person with decision making capacities so as to not delay the dialogue any longer. “But we need to go from dialogue to direct action”, said Caicedo, and he added “we are getting ready to take the roads and neighborhoods by the end of August”.
