Subtle deceit: interview with Costa Rican native people representatives about REDD

“The main issue when we talk about the right to consultation is that the people in charge of REDD projects don´t say anything to us. They don´t say how it will be managed or what will happen to our forests, and this is why we have so much uncertainty”, said the Terraba indigenous leader Pablo Sivas, of Costa Rica.

“The government is mandated to hold consultations by international conventions, but they are using them in their own way”, he regretted during a public forum about REDD projects in developing countries. The activity took place in San Jose, Costa Rican capital city, on May 19-20, and it was organized by COECOCEIBA-Friends of the Earth Costa Rica.

In addition to what Sivas said, we share the words of Martiza Castro, Maleku indigenous leader: “We´ve always taken care of nature. Forests have been the provider of our food for years”, she said. “Unfortunately, the relationship between indigenous peoples and the government is being managed by the wrong people, who are not interested in preserving our forests. There are people who have been bought to win the hearts of communities in a subtle way, with deceitful information” aiming to impose REDD projects.
