Alert over “new generation” trade agreements

Friends of the Earth International at the World Social Forum: interview with Economic Justice Program Coordinator

Thousands of activists closed on Saturday a new edition of the World Social Forum in Tunisia, 15 years after the 1st forum of the international antiglobalization movement took place in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

“Another world is inevitable” stated the activists from Tunisia, going a little further from the legendary slogan of the forum: “another world is possible”. The event took place in an extremely delicate context in Tunisia: on March 18, a terrorist attack against The Bardo Museum of that city caused the death of 22 people.

Meanwhile ,on Sunday, approximately 25,000 demonstrators mobilized against terrorism. Even foreign Heads of State participated in the protests. The participants of the World Social Forum did something similar on Tuesday, at the opening of the forum, under the motto “peoples of the world against terrorism”.

Friends of the Earth International was once again represented at the Forum. Real World Radio interviewed on Friday Friends of the Earth International´s Economic Justice-Resisting Neoliberalism Program Co-Coordinator, Sam Cossargilbert.

The activist mainly focused on the Forum´s agenda against free trade, the perspective of Friends of the Earth International about several trade agreements, especially those referred to as “new generation” agreements, and the participation of social movements and organizations in the activities of the Forum.
