The work of the Climate Caravan in Colombia

The participants of the Climate Caravan that has been travelling through Latin America since March 1st are currently in Bogota, capital of Colombia, doing communications work to tell about their journey.

The Caravan left Venezuelan territory and entered the Colombian department of Guajira in the first days of August, to participate then (on August 7-9) in the Popular Tribunal against the coal mining project El Cerrejon in the indigenous lands of Cerrohatonuevo and Provincial.

The activists who are participating in the Caravan started their journey on March 1st in Mexico and expect to reach Lima, Peru, in December, for the UN COP20 on Climate Change. They have already travelled through seven Central American countries, they visited tens of communities in resistance and have travelled through Venezuela and Colombia. They plan to reach Ecuador by mid September.

Real World Radio interviewed one of the participants, Braulio Gutierrez who talked about his experience in Colombia and focused especially on what happened during the Popular Tribunal against El Cerrejon and the visit to the communities affected by the Hidrosogamoso dam, in Santander department.

Before leaving Colombia, the participants of the Climate Caravan expect to visit the area of “El Quimbo” dam in Huila department.
