Garifuna Community Members Kidnapped by Paramilitary Groups in Honduras

The leader of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH), Miriam Miranda, and another twenty members of the community were kidnapped by paramilitary forces in Vallecito, in Colon department. Community members managed to rescue them.

The nearly 80 hectares of land in Vallecito were recovered two years ago by the Garifuna community, which now has the property title. The number of people living there fluctuates, mostly because of the bad quality of water as a result of the contamination with agrotoxics used in the palm oil plantations nearby.

Nahum Lalin told Real World Radio that OFRANEH believes the kidnapping could be linked with drugdealers of the area. Besides, the Government had marked the lands as the possible site for the construction of model cities and it also encouraged peasants, through the National Agrarian Institute, to reclaim the lands as theirs, trying to divide the community.

Lalin said he was on his way to Vallecito with other OFRANEH members to support the community members and keep the national and international alert.
