In Fall of last year, the relationship between China Union and the community dwellers who live where it operates deteriorated drastically. After a series of public demonstrations which featured community members pleading for the company to live up to its MDA, there was a large strike in the area in October. The ERU was called out to quell the demonstration, which they did by firing live rounds in the air.

SDI staff visited the China Union concession many times during this period, and are now preparing to publicly release the results of their findings. The chief finding was that China Union has not lived up to the social commitments made in its MDA, and that the company has a very bad reputation in the Bong Mines community.
