Alliance for the Food Sovereignty of Latin America and Caribbean Peoples

Without real participation of the peoples, the FAO can´t play its original role

“It took us 20 years to start this dialogue” said the spokesperson of the Alliance for the Food Sovereignty of the Latin American and Caribbean Peoples, Francisca Rodríguez, to officials of the FAO Regional Office. There she demanded dialogues and real participation to face the territorial, environmental, economic and cultural attacks against communities that produce food in the continent.

Rodriguez highlighted that an organization such as the FAO, which has utmost prestige and legitimacy at international level and whose original goal was to fight against world hunger after World War II cannot take on a “neutral” role between the model that generates hunger and populations that while producing food, remain with high poverty levels.

The intervention of the representative of the Latin American Coordination of Countryside Organizations (CLOC-Via Campesina) occurred in the framework of the debates of social movements towards the 33rd Regional Meeting of the FAO.

The movements gathered in the Alliance for the Food Sovereignty of Latin American and Caribbean Peoples will hold a week of action in October to demand the respect of food sovereignty as a right and a construction from the peoples against the current production model, a co-development with common natural resources and food.
