Friends of the Earth Europe warns about danger of flood of tar sand imports to the region

“New figures released by the United States Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on January 24th show that if Europe does not act, its imports of tar sands, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels, would likely skyrocket from about 4,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2012 to over 700,000 bpd in 2020”.

“The resulting emissions increase in transport would be the equivalent of adding six million cars to Europe’s roads. The 2020 scenario will occur if the EU clean fuel standard, set out in the Fuel Quality Directive, is not comprehensively implemented”, says Friends of the Earth Europe (FOE Europe) in its website (see: http://www.foeeurope.org/flood-tar-sands-imports-Europe-240114).

To know more about FoE Europe´s opinion about the NRDC study, Real World Radio interviewed Fabian Flues, Extractive Industries Campaigner of the environmental network. The activist talked about the new study and its results, he described the situation around tar sands in different parts of the world, its alternatives, and how FoE is working on the issue.

According to FOE Europe, the new research by the NRDC and released by the environmental organization Transport and Environment and Greenpeace shows that "imports of Canadian tar sands are likely to be between 5.3% and 6.7% of the EU’s oil consumption by 2020, as a result of pipelines that are planned or under construction in the US and Canada”. “The European Commission’s impact assessment study had originally predicted tar sand imports from Canada to reach only 0.2% in 2020”, adds FoE Europe´s website.
