The Aftermath of the Dismissal of Bogota’s Mayor Gustavo Petro

Colombian Presidential candidate for the party Union Patriotica, Aida Abella, told La Radio del Sur that the dismissal of Bogotá’s mayor Gustavo Petro by Attorney General Alejandro Ordoñez is a coup on democracy.

On the show “Mientras tanto y por si acaso” she said: “The Attorney General is a man who defends war in the country, while he should be promoting tolerance, dialogue and peace. All his actions are acts of war, like what happened yesterday”.

The presidential candidate said the decision is a political move to favor the conservative sector of former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and highlighted the influence and power of Attorney General Ordoñez.

We hereby quote parts of Abella’s interview for the Venezuelan website. “Ordoñez has forbidden President Juan Manuel Santos to attend party events and has told him to be careful with doing anything in support of Petro. Santos believes that the Attorney General has the power to fire Petro, which is why he has not supported the protests in support of Petro”.

Abella claimed that Petro tried to end corruption in the waste collection service, to improve the lives of the residents of Bogota.

“The big concern and the tragedy for Colombians is being such a rich country, which is why transnational corporations and the US have interests here. If this country was ran differently it would imply a great contribution to Latin America”..

“We want peace in Colombia, the people are tired of so much corruption and divide. We want to enjoy a peaceful country, that is what I am offering to the people”.

The decision to fire Petro has to be ratified by President Santos in order to enter into effect. After that, a replacement will be appointed, under the Colombian laws.
