Keep the Oil in the Soil

The YFoEE Annual Summer Camp: A hundred People, Twenty Languages, One Cause*

The Young Friends of Earth in Europe (YFoEE) 2013 summer camp took place in Lofoten Islands, Norway from July the 28th to August the 4th. It focused on climate justice, resisting dirty energy and the fossil fuel industry, and stopping oil drilling in Lofoten and the Arctic. The summer camp gathered about one hundred young activists from 25 countries around the world for a week of learning, exchanging their knowledge and experiences, as well as building skills and plans for joint action.

Real World Radio interviewed two activists from YFoEE who participated in the camp: Adesuwa Uwagie-Ero (26) from Nigeria and Maruška Mileta (23) from Croatia.

They talked about the activities they participated in (such as hiking, whale watching), but also about the main issues dealt with during the camp.

The participants from all around the world came to support Young FoE Norway’s campaign against oil extraction in Lofoten Islands.

There will be parliamentary elections in Norway in September, and one of the aims of the YFoEE camp is to pressure politicians to take a firm stand and stop drilling. The camp was also a good opportunity for international activists to become aware of environmental issues in other parts of the world and to meet other cultures and nationalities.

«We have a common cause», said Adesuwa from Nigeria, a country suffering from extraction projects.
