Dignity Point

Images of the resistance to the gold and silver mine in San Jose del Golfo, Guatemala

The communities of San Jose del Golfo and San Pedro de Ayampuc, 30 minutes away from the capital of Guatemala, have been resisting in a peaceful and collective way for over nine months. The community is organized by shifts and is able to gather thousands of people in a few minutes when the mining company’s staff arrives to enter the land, provoking the people present.

The Mission of Friends of the Earth International visited La Puya, now known as the "Resistance Point". In that place, beans and rice are the daily sustenance and the people who arrive to express their solidarity are always welcomed with another plate.

The company operated in an illegal way for ten years and exhausted all water sources -already scarce- communities and peasants depended on. Lies are a common feature of these death projects. The dignity of the people is true.
