Living Proof of Claim

Interview with Macarena Gelman in Silence March

“These marches are a living proof of claims for truth and justice” said Macarena Gelman in an interview with Real World Radio. She is the granddaughter of Argentinian writer Juan Gelman and daughter of disappeared people. Macarena was born during their captivity and adopted by a Uruguayan family.

The interview was held in the framework of the latest Silence March, which takes place every May 20th, date associated with the murder in Buenos Aires of Uruguayan senator Zelmar Michelini by the forces of Plan Condor, and which demands the clearing up of over 50 forced disappearances in Uruguay.

Juan Gelman´s unceasing struggle resulted in the identification of his granddaughter, who even before knowing her identity participated as another citizen in the marches.

This week, the Uruguayan Electoral Commission confirmed that the amount of signatures needed to have a referendum on October National Elections on the repeal of the impunity law was reached. This law has protected the people responsible for state terrorism during over two decades.

This way, the Uruguayan people will be able to choose, in addition to their next national authorities, what to do with the criminals –from the military, the police and also civilians, responsible for the latest dictatorship of the country which lasted 12 years.

Macarena is focused on finding the remains of her mother, Maria Claudia Irureta Goyena de Gelman.

Macarena stated in the interview with Real World Radio that she is confident on the democratic repeal of the law and on finding the remains of all the disappeared people.
