Members of Friends of the Earth International assess negotiations and actions around forests and food sovereignty at the Committee on World Food Security

Kirtana Chandrasekaran, coordinator of the Food Sovereignty Program at Friends of the Earth International, together with Diego Alejandro Cardona, of CENSAT – Friends of the Earth Colombia, assessed the 44th round of sessions of the Committee on World Food Security that took place in October in Rome, Italy.

“We´ve been fighting here for the recognition that forests are about people, that all forests contain people, that they are not just about economics, but forests are, more importantly, about cultural relationships, livelihoods, political dimensions for the people who live in them”, said Kirtana.

Meanwhile, Diego stated: “This is a victory not only for us, the people who are here at the FAO; it is a victory for all these communities, all these indigenous people, Afro-descendent people, farmers, who for several years denounced this kind of impacts”.

These testimonies were gathered on October 12, when the majority of the members of the Committee on World Food Security decided to join the proposal of social organizations to, in some way, rediscuss the “official” definition of forests and their elements, as well as their importance for food security.
