2014 Special Broadcasts / COP 20 - Lima

From 1 to 12 of December of 2014, Peru’s capital, Lima, will host the 20th Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Industrialized countries will try to free themselves of their obligations resulting from the climate debt they owe to the countries of the south (such as reducing emissions, climate finance and technology transfer) and they will continue to promote false market solutions to climate change. At the same time, from December 9 to 12, social movements and organizations of the world will meet in Lima at the Peoples’ Summit to promote real solutions and mobilize for climate justice.

    The financialization of nature and extractivism

    On the 7th of December Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Brasil arranged the seminar: ”The Financialization of Nature and Extracivism: reflections and challenges for the defense of territory and the sovereignty of people”, parallel to the UN Climate talks COP 20, in Lima, Peru. Thomas Fatheuer, author of ’New Economy of Nature’ was one of the invited speakers and discussed how nature is increasingly seen and used as a commodity, and how it is linked to profit. Read more

    Interview with Jagoda Munic on the first day of the Peoples´ Summit in Lima

    The Peoples´ Summit taking place in Lima, parallel to the COP 20 on Climate Change, started today with over 50 activities. After the event titled “Exposing false solutions to the climate crisis”, organized by Friends of the Earth International, Real World Radio interviewed the federation´s Chair, Jagoda Munic, to know more about the goals of FoEI in terms of the Summit and the UN talks on climate change that are being held in the Military Headquarters of Peru, which will come to an end on Friday 12.     Desperate voices: testimonies of the wives and daughter of indigenous activists murdered in Alto Tamaya – Saweto community, Peru

    Several social organisations present at the Climate Change COP taking place in Lima, Peru, held this Friday an action in solidarity with the Alto Tamaya – Saweto indigenous community of that country, and especially with the widows and a daughter of the four leaders murdered three months ago in the context of their struggle for land ownership titles (photo gallery below).     Fracking industry - yet another false solution

    Interview with Susanne Scherbarth and Antoine Simon, Friends of the Earth Europe

    On December 1st – the same day as the UN climate talks in Lima, Peru began Friends of the Earth Europe (FOEE) released the report: “Fracking Frenzy: how the fracking industry is threatening the planet”. The report highlights the expansion of the shale gas fracking industry - with examples of eleven key countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. It finds that multinational oil and gas companies such as Total, Shell and Chevron are moving into increasingly vulnerable countries - where the ecosystems, communities and authorities are even less unable to cope with the impacts of extraction.     The third day of negotiations at the UN COP on Climate Change taking place in Lima, Peru, started with a protest action held by several social organizations against Japan funding a coal plant in Indonesia as part of their “climate finance” (see photo gallery). See gallery

    Voices of dissent: Japan under scrutiny

    Real World Radio interviewed Julian Velez, of Earth in Brackets, during the action carried out on Wednesday where several social organisations expressed their opposition against Japan considering the funds for a coal plant in Indonesia as climate finance. The activist of the Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice also called to stop the development of dirty energy immediately. Read more

    Young European activists follows the UN Climate talks in Brussels

    The 20th session of the UN climate talks, the COP 20, began this week in Lima, Peru. Friends of the Earth participate in the COP campaigning for a fair global climate deal. Parallel to the events in Lima Young Friends of the Earth Europe are arranging the event “Brussels in Lima” – an event that will gather young Europeans to follow the climate negotiations in Lima and mobilize for change.     World’s civil society mobilizing in Venezuela

    Interview with Maruska Mileta, Young Friends of the Earth Europe

    During the first weeks in November civil society gathered in a Social PreCOP on Climate Change in Venezuela. It was the first public consultation process where government and civil society joined to set the basis of an agreement on how to act on the threat that climate change poses. Maruska Mileta, from Young Friends of the Earth Europe, participated in the event and emphasizes how it opened up the space for civil society and social movements to articulate their vision on equal terms.     What´s on the table at the climate talks in Lima

    In a press conference held on Monday, at the opening of the UN COP 20 on Climate Change taking place in Lima, Peru, activist Meena Raman of Third World Network and Friends of the Earth Malaysia called attention to the need to start developing North-South adaptation and finance/technology transfer measures to address the climate crisis.
