Nearly 1,500 people participated in the Peoples’ Summit opening act on Thursday in Cartagena, Colombia. The Peoples’ Summit is the alternative to the 6th Summit of the Americas to be held in the same city next weekend, with the participation of the heads of state of over 30 countries of the continent.

There is a good turnout at the Peoples’ Summit, especially during the first workshops organized in the morning, reports Real World Radio’s correspondent in Colombia, Danilo Urrea*.

One of Thursday’s panels focused on land, territory and food sovereignty and it was moderated by Aurelio Suarez, a renowned Colombian rural and political leader, who is associated with the struggles of small coffee producers in the country. He is also a representative of Salvacion Agropecuaria (or the National Association for Agriculture Salvation), a non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of the Colombians who work on land and live on agriculture. Suarez is also an industrial engineer and a journalist.

After the panel on land, territories and food sovereignty, Real World Radio asked the member of Salvación Agropecuaria to assess the activity. The leader highlighted the current global trend of land foreignization and land grabbing.

Rel-UITA interviewed Suarez last July, who said back then: “The Colombian agriculture sector is totally ruined and food production is over. Colombia has the greatest land concentration in the world and 75% of the rural workers earn less than the minimum wage. On top of this, two out of three rural residents lives in poverty, and one in three lives in extreme poverty”.
