The network Climate Justice Now, which gathers hundreds of organizations and social movements, had the chance to expose its concerns to the G77 plus China on Wednesday. This negotiating group in the COP 15 on Climate Change comprises 136 developing countries plus China.
Ricardo Navarro, member of CESTA- Friends of the Earth El Salvador did the presentation on behalf of Climate Justice Now.
In an interview with Real World Radio, Navarro said that the aim was to tell the G77 plus China that climate change will not be solved unless its root causes are addressed.
The environmental activist said they told the developing countries that it is very important to demand the countries of the North to fulfill their historical responsibility. For this reason they should immediately reduce their polluting emissions. “We support the Bolivian proposal that the developed countries should reduce their domestic emissions on 45% by 2017 without resorting to offsetting, carbon trading or Clean Development Mechanisms”.
Navarro said that the other important issue dealt with during the meeting was that the developed countries should provide funds to compensate the damages caused by climate change in the global South. “We recommend the G77 that these funds should not be managed by the World Bank, because it has been responsible for the world’s most polluting projects. These funds should be controlled by the UN”.
The network Climate Justice Now tried to strengthen the positions that the G77 plus China is considering, so that their own positions stay firm.
On Thursday afternoon, Navarro will speak again in an event at the Klimaforum, the parallel forum to the official conference. He will speak about the future possibilities to create a Climate Justice Tribunal to try those who commit environmental crimes.
