Next Tuesday, on the day of the National Independence of Colombia, hundreds of indigenous from the departments of Cauca, Caquetá, Huila and Nariño will arrive in the capital, Bogota, to protest against the situation they are going through.
The indigenous will arrive in Bogota amid the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Colombia, when they will say that they are not truly free, because there is no such independence for the communities, because they are still being victims of systematic violence.
“We are going to Bogota to tell the whole world that the native peoples suffer violence, we are not autonomous, we are not really free and our rights are not respected, so we have nothing to celebrate”, Luis Calambas, promoter of the demonstration, told TeleSur.
The remarks of the communities are in line with the survey carried out this month by the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. After its visit to Colombia the UN agency declared that the human rights situation of the native peoples in the country continued being “extremely serious and deeply concerning, despite the constitution recognized their rights”.
The mobilizations of the indigenous in different parts of the country so far have been peacful. ON Sunday there was an important day in Cali, when over 1,500 native peoples demonstrated against the celebration of the Bicentennial through artistic expressions.
Next Tuesday, the demonstrations of the native peoples are expected to be held in Bogota with a march that will contrast with the official celebrations, which will consist of a military parade and music concerts.
