Clouds of black smoke were coming out of the area where the Pearl square is located, in Manama, Bahrain’s capital, after a large scale military operation crushed peaceful demonstrations against the ruling Arab kingdom.

The square is the center of the protests, which began over a month ago and are led by the Shia minority that opposes the Sunni-ruled kingdom, which has been in power for over two centuries.

The operation included armored vehicles and helicopters and took place a day after the ruling kingdom had declared a state of siege, amid clashes were two demonstrators were killed and at least a hundred were injured.

Meanwhile, it is still being analyzed whether the more than a thousand soldiers from Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates participated in the repression. They entered Bahrain this week to support the kingdom, in something that was described by the opposers to the regime as an invasion.

The international agencies report that three people were killed, one of them by a gunshot in his back, and hundreds were injured in the assault against the demonstrators in Pearl square.

Meanwhile, the Bahrain authorities said that three police officers had also died during the repression.

Besides, amid the state of siege, the military clashed with people who were trying to gather or head to the capital city, by setting strict checkpoints.
