The 4th Americas Social Forum, a space where over 500 social organizations from around the world are participating, began on Wednesday, August 11th.
Hundreds of peasants, indigenous people, environmentalists and unionists are gathered at the National Sports Council, where the workshops are taking place. The event was opened by a march, where Rigoberta Menchú participated.
Magui Balbuena, from CONAMURI (the National Coordination of Rural and Indigenous Women) said to Real World Radio that one of the main expectations of the host groups is to gain a strong political support for the process of struggle started by them two years ago.
Balbuena said this in reference to the fact that Fernando Lugo took office on August 15th, 2008. “We´ve had some difficulties, but we trust that the ASF will be of great support”, said the member of Conamuri, which contributed with more than 400 activists to organize the event.
